T<\/span>he documentary, <\/span><\/span>Rojek<\/span><\/span><\/em>, <\/span>is <\/span>r<\/span>epresenting<\/span> Canada <\/span>in the nomination process for the Best International Feature Film category at the 96th Academy Awards\u00ae, set to take place on March 10, 2024.<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In one of the most competitive years for Canadian cinema (with 28 films submitted for consideration), <\/span>Rojek<\/span><\/i><\/b> was selected by the pan-Canadian Selection Committee, a jury of industry peers, as the film to represent Canada in the Oscar\u00ae race.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Rojek<\/span><\/i><\/b> delves deep into the world of incarcerated members of the Islamic State who share a common dream: establishing a caliphate. Through interviews and personal stories, the film confronts their fundamentalist beliefs and seeks to trace the beginning, rise, and fall of the Islamic State (ISIS). These conversations form the backbone of the documentary, interwoven with scenes depicting post-war Syrian Kurdistan.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The documentary offers an intimate glimpse into an unfamiliar reality, bearing witness to pivotal moments in the lives of those caught in this conflict.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Directed and written by Zayn\u00ea Akyol, <\/span>Rojek<\/span><\/i><\/b> was brought to life at Metafilms, with production credits shared by Audrey-Ann Dupuis-Pierre, Sylvain Corbeil, and the director herself. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

For director, writer, and producer Zayn\u00ea Akyol, being chosen to represent Canada at the Oscars\u00ae with <\/span>Rojek<\/span><\/i><\/b> is a \u201ctremendous honor,\u201d saying that \u201c[t]his moment is the fruit of our shared passion and unwavering commitment to cinema and justice.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Rojek<\/span><\/i><\/b> is a documentary that transcends language barriers, weaving a narrative tapestry in Arabic, English, French, and Kurdish. The film made its debut at the 2022 Visions du R\u00e9el Film Festival in Nyon, Switzerland. Notably, <\/span>Rojek<\/span><\/i><\/b> clinched the DGC Special Jury Prize – Canadian Feature Documentary at the 2022 Hot Docs Canadian International Film Festival.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In the history of the Oscars\u00ae, eight Canadian films have been official nominees in the Best International Feature Film category. Notable mentions include <\/span>Rebelle<\/span><\/i><\/b> in 2013, <\/span>Monsieur Lazhar<\/span><\/i><\/b> and <\/span>In Darkness <\/span><\/i><\/b>(a minority coproduction with Poland and Germany) in 2012, <\/span>Incendies<\/span><\/i><\/b> in 2011, and <\/span>Water<\/span><\/i><\/b> in 2007. Denys Arcand’s works, such as <\/span>Le D\u00e9clin de l’empire am\u00e9ricain<\/span><\/i><\/b>, <\/span>J\u00e9sus de Montr\u00e9al<\/span><\/i><\/b>, and <\/span>Les Invasions barbares<\/span><\/i><\/b>, have also left their mark, with the latter winning the coveted Oscar\u00ae.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
