From science fiction to romantic comedies, thrillers to documentaries, this year\u2019s official selection showcases a diverse range of stories from Canadian and Indigenous filmmakers.<\/h3>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe Toronto International Film Festival\u2019s 49th edition takes place from September 5 to 15, 2024. As always, Canada will be there with our Canada Pavilion, events, and exceptional Canadian and Indigenous films and coproductions.\n\nFirst, fresh off the Cannes red carpet, we\u2019ve got some exciting North American premieres at TIFF by famed filmmakers you know and love. Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson\u2019s Rumours<\/em><\/strong><\/a>; Matthew Rankin\u2019s Universal Language (Une langue universelle)<\/em><\/strong><\/a> \u2013 which took home the Chantal Akerman audience award for best Directors’ Fortnight film at Cannes; and David Cronenberg\u2019s The Shrouds<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.\n

\nThe TIFF Classics program features two of the 23 titles being digitized and\/or restored through Telefilm Canada\u2019s Canadian Cinema – Reignited <\/a>digitization initiative, in partnership with TIFF. They are Atom Egoyan\u2019s 1997 Oscar-nominated drama The Sweet Hereafter <\/em><\/strong>and Srinivas Krishna\u2019s 1991 drama Masala<\/em><\/strong>.\n

\nFrom established directors to emerging talent, TIFF\u2019s official selection also includes two first directorial features that were supported by Telefilm Canada\u2019s Talent to Watch Program: Karen Chapman\u2019s Village Keeper<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, which follows a mother processing her grief, and Arianna Martinez\u2019s Do I Know You From Somewhere?<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 <\/em>a multiverse rom-com that explores a couple\u2019s \u2018what-if\u2019s.\u2019 Another film for the sci-fi fans is Marie-H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Viens and Philippe Lupien\u2019s You Are Not Alone (Vous n’\u00eates pas seuls)<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, about a pizza-delivery man whose blossoming romance is disrupted by an alien.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAmong the themes explored in our world premiere features are climate change, the environment, and our relationship to the land. Vancouver-based Ann Marie Fleming combines live action and animation in Can I Get a Witness?<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, which reunites the filmmaker and Sandra Oh, in a world where people die at age 50 to save the planet.\n

\nRyan Cooper and Eva Thomas\u2019s Aberdeen<\/em><\/strong> follows a climate change refugee from Peguis First Nation fighting for the stability of her grandkids. And in Seeds<\/strong><\/em>,<\/strong> the directorial debut of Kanien’keh\u00e1:ka (Mohawk) actress Kaniehtiio Horn (who also stars in this comedy), an influencer protects her aunt\u2019s cache of seeds from a home invasion.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Sophie Deraspe\u2019s Canada-France coproduction Shepherds (Bergers)<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is an adaptation of Mathyas Lefebure’s D’o\u00f9 viens tu, berger?.\u00a0<\/em>Oscar-nominated Chlo\u00eb Sevigny stars in Durga Chew-Bose\u2019s Bonjour Tristesse<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, a Canada-Germany coproduction that adapts Fran\u00e7oise Sagan\u2019s 1954 novel.\n

\nMaking its world premiere is Sook-Yin Lee\u2019s Paying for It<\/em><\/strong>, an adaptation of a 2011 graphic novel written by Chester Brown. And based on Canadian writer Russell Wangersky\u2019s short story \u201cWhirl Away,\u201d Jason Buxton\u2019s thriller Sharp Corner<\/em><\/strong><\/a> stars Cobie Smulders and Ben Foster.\n

\nWe\u2019ve also got Amar Wala\u2019s Shook<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, the documentary filmmaker\u2019s first narrative feature about a writer in the fallout of his father\u2019s health crisis; Johnny Ma\u2019s Canada-Chile coproduction The Mother and the Bear <\/em><\/strong>which follows the antics of an overbearing mom as she cares for her comatose daughter; and much more\u2026\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
